AMAZON AND ECOLOGY

The Amazon rainforest, home to millions of indigenous peoples, a rich resource of biodiversity and a magnificent expression of God’s creation. Not only does it serve as a precious resource for the whole planet, but protecting is essential in the fight against climate change. So why is it still being burned down for short term profit, and what does our treatment of this magnificent resource say about us? To protect the Amazon a new way of seeing, thinking and acting is needed.

This new way is called integral ecology.

What is integral ecology? While the term integral ecology may be an unfamiliar one, it nonetheless plays an essential role in the Catholic Church’s thinking and approach to tackling the ecological crisis today. Drawing upon the wisdom of the Church, Pope Francis urges us all to view both the ecological and the human crisis through an integral approach, as a way for us all to work together to protect the earth, our common home.
